At The Safina Center we are helping to make the case for life on Earth. Our mission: help keep the living world alive by inspiring people to engage in real-world change. We understand that while information is important, people base decisions on values. We fuse scientific understanding, emotional connection, and a moral call to action.

We produce tangible, sharable, durable works. Our products are award-winning books (including New York Times-bestsellers), award-winning films, PBS television series, high-profile articles in major publishing outlets such as TIME and The New Yorker, TED talks and web-based media published across influential platforms such as CNN.com and NatGeo.org, and other products. We are seen as go-to experts and frequently appear on National Public Radio and public television. Our work makes deep, lasting impressions.

We work with people in many far-flung countries and at home. We work by witnessing the natural world changing globally. Then we explain what those changes mean for people and other living things.

As thought-leaders helping to shape the human relationship with nature, our power is in ideas and words. We are widely experienced, deeply knowledgeable, and unflinchingly opinionated. We’re unusual.

Our business model is: be mighty in influence, global in reach, yet small in staff and budget.

The Safina Center (formerly Blue Ocean Institute) was founded in 2003 by ecologist and author Dr. Carl Safina. Safina’s research, writing and policy work has been recognized with MacArthur, Pew, and Guggenheim Fellowships, and his writing has won National Academies, Orion, and Lannan, literary awards and the John Burroughs, James Beard, and George Rabb medals. Safina is the first endowed professor for Nature and Humanity at Stony Brook University, where he co-chairs the steering committee of the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science. Carl Safina has written seven books, hosted the 10-part PBS television series Saving the Ocean with Carl Safina and contributes frequently to various magazines and websites. Audubon magazine named him one of the 100 most influential conservationists of the 20th Century. In 2011, Utne Reader listed him among “25 Visionaries Changing the World.” His most recent TED Talk received a million views in its first month. His latest bestselling book, Beyond Words, affirms his role as one of today’s leading voices for nature.

The Safina Center is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based at Stony Brook University on Long Island, NY.
