We are seen as go-to experts and frequently appear on National Public Radio and public television. Our work makes deep, lasting impressions.

The Safina Center (formerly Blue Ocean Institute) was founded in 2003 by ecologist and author Dr. Carl Safina. Safina’s research, writing and policy work has been recognized with MacArthur, Pew, and Guggenheim Fellowships, and his writing has won National Academies, Orion, and Lannan, literary awards and the John Burroughs, James Beard, and George Rabb medals. Safina is the first endowed professor for Nature and Humanity at Stony Brook University, where he co-chairs the steering committee of the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science. Carl Safina has written seven books, hosted the 10-part PBS television series Saving the Ocean with Carl Safina and contributes frequently to various magazines and websites. Audubon magazine named him one of the 100 most influential conservationists of the 20th Century. In 2011, Utne Reader listed him among “25 Visionaries Changing the World.” His most recent TED Talk received a million views in its first month. His latest bestselling book, Beyond Words, affirms his role as one of today’s leading voices for nature.
