For over 20 years Blue Frontier has been a national leader in providing resources and opportunities to bring people who care about the health of our coasts and ocean together, creating solutions for the environmental challenges facing our ocean world. We recently acquired a classic 1934 yacht to continue our work.
Blue Frontier’s William Hand designed 47-foot Motorsailer, ‘Queen of the Coast’ is a historic wooden yacht that we’re committed to preserving and using for ocean and youth education. The ‘Queen’ will highlight the maritime heritage at the heart of California’s wooden boat culture going back to indigenous Tomol canoes crafted by the Chumash people of the central coast.
It will also be used to strengthen the links between today’s maritime heritage community and marine conservationists seeking to solve ocean and coastal challenges through youth and citizen education. A dedicated crew of volunteers will regularly cruise it up and down ‘The Kelp Highway’ (Alaska to Baja) educating people along the way on the importance of restoring healthy kelp forests, building coastal resilience, preserving working waterfronts, and empowering youths who might not otherwise have an opportunity to get on the water and learn the ways of tides, currents and the sea because, as Jacques Cousteau used to say, ‘You protect what you love.’
None of this will be easy or inexpensive which is why we’re working to build a crew of dedicated ‘Queen of the Coast’ Sailors, Volunteers and Sponsors who believe in and can be a part of the Queen’s mission, while sailing with us to celebrate and engage with a diverse range of ocean communities both human and wild.
