In our dynamic, intensive 3-6-hour workshops attendees learn techniques to turn their coastal and conservation issues into popular stories and pitches to engage public interest. They learn how to pitch and work effectively with journalists and editors to get their story out there, how to develop and communicate engaging stories about their work and how to produce their own stories for print, broadcast and social media.
These workshops have been held for numerous scientists, youth activists and academics who’ve expressed their thanks and astonishment at the results. It’s been presented at a range of venues including: The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), American Geophysical Union (AGU), Earth X, Middlebury Institute for International Studies, EarthEcho Youth Leadership Summit, Restore America’s Estuaries Summit, Reef Futures 2022, National Congress on Science Education and the Sierra Club.
Attendees learn from experienced and working journalists and an award-winning public relations professional how to use journalistic techniques to turn conservation issues into popular stories and media pitches. The workshops include an attendee “Pitch Slam” to present story ideas to our professional panel to provide feedback.
The best ideas are then run through breakout sessions for print, broadcast and social media development. A separate breakout session is provided for those seeking to improve their media interview techniques. Workshop attendees are also provided a 10-point takeaway to remind them of key lessons they can and should apply to all their communications.
The workshop trainers are: Blue Frontier’s Executive Director David Helvarg, the author of six books, hundreds of articles, and host of the Rising Tide Ocean Podcast; Blue Frontier’s Senior Communications Advisor Eleanor (Elli) Kerlow, a lawyer, former journalist, and award-winning public relations professional, and a working journalist, generally associated with the region where the workshop is taking place. To date these have included two Pulitzer-prize winning reporters from Louisiana and Minnesota plus reporters from major newspapers, TV and NPR radio.
