Ocean and Coastal Health Draws Advocates to Nation’s Capitol
Blue Frontier Joins Hundreds of Ocean Advocates at the Blue Vision Summit and Peter Benchley Ocean Awards May 13-16 in D.C including Healthy Ocean Hill Day May 15
May 7, 2013 –Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Representatives Ed Markey and Sam Farr, Dr. Sylvia Earle, Dr. Jane Lubchenco, Fabien Cousteau, the marine artist Wyland, Sherman’s Lagoon creator Jim Toomey and hundreds of other ocean and coastal advocates from business, science, conservation and exploration will be in DC next week promoting healthy public seas.
Blue Frontier will be hosting the 4th Blue Vision Summit May 13-16 and, with Wendy Benchley, the 6th annual Peter Benchley Ocean Awards, the world’s preeminent marine conservation awards May 15. This year’s eight winners include President Mackey Sall of Senegal and Rep. Ed Markey (D MA).
Themes for this year’s Summit include disaster response that protects ecosystems that protect us all, making Climate Change an ocean issue and Youth leadership for our blue planet.
The centerpiece of the four-day conference will be a full day on Capitol Hill meeting with Congressional representatives to discuss the economic and conservation benefits of the President’s National Ocean Policy and advocating for measures to protect seafood safety and punish illegal and pirate fishing. Greeted by Senator Brian Schatz of Hawaii and other members of Congress, hundreds of citizen-activists will then meet with and let their elected representatives to let them know that we expect them to protect the blue in our red, white and blue.
